Monark: A Brand Built to Last - From Green Rush to Lifetime Tattoo Care
"Monark is the kind of client every designer dreams about — full creative trust, deep creative control, and the rare chance to build and evolve an entire brand across every touchpoint from day one."
A Mission Built on Integrity
The cannabis industry in its early days was a little like the Wild West — exciting, fast-moving, and full of people cutting corners to stake their claim. Monark was built as the antidote to that. Founded on a commitment to clean ingredients, responsible extraction, and products that genuinely helped people, Monark entered the market with something most competitors lacked: integrity.
Natural alternatives to physical and mental pain were at the core of the mission — for people managing chronic conditions, recovering from injuries, or simply looking for something gentler than what conventional options had to offer. Veterans held a special place in that mission too, with a portion of MOAB CBD seltzer sales going directly to benefit them.
That kind of intentionality doesn't just inform a product — it informs a brand. It also made the work considerably more complex than most.

Designing Through the Green Rush

The cannabis industry, even on the CBD side, came with a constantly shifting regulatory landscape that touched every corner of the brand. Labeling required precise compliance. E-commerce was a minefield — finding payment processors willing to work with cannabis-adjacent products was its own challenge. The website was flagged more than once for medical claims, even when those claims referenced other herbal ingredients entirely. For CBD, the messaging became intentionally arms-length. Social media operated the same way — no claims, no exceptions, and eventually not even acknowledging a customer testimonial without risking a flag.
Designing within those constraints while still building something compelling, credible, and conversion-ready? That was the real creative challenge.

Chapter 1: Building the Monark Wellness Brand
Building the Monark Wellness brand meant creating something that could hold its own on a crowded shelf while staying true to the values underneath it.
The visual direction landed on a clean, bold aesthetic with a nod to WW2 pin-up culture — modernized, confident, and just a little rebellious. It was the right fit for a brand doing things differently in an industry that largely wasn't.
Packaging was designed across the full product line — five tincture variations, two gummy options, a soothing salve, the tattoo salve, the MOAB CBD seltzer in three flavors, and prerolls. Each piece had to work individually and cohesively as a family, telling the same brand story whether someone picked up a tin, a bottle, or a can.
The preroll packaging deserves a moment of its own. The display box was designed to function as both retail packaging and a store display — fold the top, tuck it in, and the logo architecture rises up for shelf presence. The exterior is sleek and confident: black background, green and gold branding, purple and red accents, and a pin-up in a purple dress anchoring the design. Open it up and the interior is its own world — a purple lining with a repeating Monark logo pattern and a green-dressed pin-up at the back with a simple message: "Don't run out! Reorder soon!" — revealed more prominently with every preroll sold. Functional, fun, and entirely on brand.
Print setup files, display designs, sell sheets, and the full monark-wellness.com website rounded out a brand system built for retail, wholesale, and the road.

The Pivot — Editing Down to What Matters
Then the green rush did what green rushes do — it got overwhelming. The market flooded, the noise got louder, and Monark made a smart, deliberate decision: strip it back to the product that had always been the most purposeful and the most powerful.
The tattoo salve had been part of the wellness line from the start, but it had always been something more. Made with calendula, arnica, rosehip, tea tree, shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax — nothing synthetic, nothing unnecessary — it was exactly what it claimed to be.
The Monark name stayed. The logo stayed. The commitment to clean, intentional products stayed. Everything else got edited away.

Chapter 2: Monark Tattoo - Sharpened and Focused
Monark Tattoo didn't need a reinvention — it needed a sharpening. The brand carried forward with clarity and purpose, expanding into the tattoo world with the same full-service approach that defined the wellness era.
Product photography was a mix of practical shoots and a handful of AI-assisted compositions created specifically for the pitch deck — the salve surrounded by every fresh ingredient that goes into it, monarch butterflies included. The imagery is lush, natural, and instantly communicates what makes this product different from anything else on a tattoo shop shelf.

The monarktattoo.com website brought the brand online, and the trade show presence brought it to life in person — banners, PVC signage, and a booth built to stop people mid-aisle. A pitch deck was developed for distributor and tattoo shop outreach, making the case for why Monark belonged on their shelves. A bookmark-sized sample card — a small piece of salve attached, ready to hand directly to a potential customer — turned a conversation into a tactile experience.
And somewhere in the middle of a trade show, the owner of Monark sat down, rolled up his sleeve, and got tattooed — wearing his own brand's shirt. That's not a marketing moment. That's belief.
